Give them a means of staying in touch with one another, whether it is through phone conversations, the exchange of email addresses or street addresses, or anything else that is age-appropriate.
  • When you pack up their room and their toys, make sure to save one or two of their favourite toys for them to bring in the car and have with them when they get there. The stuffed animal that they enjoy playing with the most should be kept.
  • Do not get rid of their belongings without first obtaining their permission, or at the very least, their awareness.
  • Engage them in the process of moving and packing up their belongings. Having work to accomplish gives people a sense of purpose and significance.
  • Encourage your older kids to investigate their new neighbourhood and find out what they can do there and where things are located, such as schools, public libraries, skate parks, swimming pools, or anything else that might pique their interest.
  • If you can, take your children on a tour of the new house before you move there so that they may get a better idea of what to expect. In the event that this cannot be done, you can show them images and highlight all of the positive aspects. A sizable backyard, close proximity to parks and pools, bike paths, and other recreational opportunities.
  • Take your children to see their new school before you move in there. Kids don’t like to stand out from the crowd, so make sure their freshly purchased school uniforms are ready to put on.
  • On the day of the move, you should ensure that everyone gets up early and is ready to travel with a backpack containing their personal belongings along with some food and beverages.
  • Unpack their belongings as soon as you get there, paying careful attention to their most treasured toys, books, and bedding. They will have a better sense of belonging as a result. The ornaments and wall images for the living room lounge can wait until the next week.
  • If toddlers are content to spend moving day alone with grandparents, it is best to leave them in their grandparents’ care if at all possible.
  • Use nightlights in the rooms where the children request them, and keep a light on in the hallway so that older kids can find their way to the bathroom.
  • If there are unusual noises, it is important to explain to the youngsters what is causing them. When travelling from the country to the city, or vice versa, you will notice these differences most clearly.

Your children will be able to sail through the process of moving to a new area without too many fears or nightmares if you prepare them in this manner.
