Indonesia’s natural environment is its greatest economic asset. The country’s extraordinary biodiversity — it contains a disproportionate share of the world’s species and sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine region on Earth — is the foundation of a tourism economy worth billions annually. Protecting that environment is not in tension with economic growth. It is its precondition.
Marina Bay Lombok is being built on this principle — with environmental planning integrated from the earliest stages of the masterplan rather than appended as a compliance requirement. The approach reflects both the project team’s values and a clear-eyed view of what creates lasting commercial value in coastal destinations.
Wastewater treatment infrastructure is built at precinct scale, removing the risk of the reef degradation and coastal water quality issues that have damaged other Indonesian coastal areas. The waterfront precinct design addresses tidal flow and circulation to protect marine water quality. Green space allocations ensure the development retains a living connection to the coastal environment.
Reef protection is a particular focus. Lombok’s position within the Coral Triangle means its reefs are a globally significant asset — and a core driver of the diving and snorkelling tourism that is central to the island’s appeal. Marina Bay Lombok is engaging with marine conservation partners on monitoring and restoration programmes that extend beyond the project’s immediate footprint.

Community benefit is built into the model from the start. Local employment commitments, Sasak community supplier development, and cultural engagement initiatives reflect a development philosophy that is serious about generating broad-based benefit — not extracting value while leaving the local economy unchanged. Indonesia’s long-term development story is most meaningful when it reaches local communities.
‘Destinations that protect their natural and cultural assets will outperform those that do not over any meaningful time horizon,’ the project team states. ‘This is the commercial logic of responsible development — and it is how Marina Bay Lombok is being built.’
